Pronunciation Debate: Pierre Avenue
Welcome to a new series where we explore various street names in Windsor that have different pronunciations based on the person you ask.
This time we are heading towards the Walkerville neighbourhood of Windsor. If you are in the Windsor real estate market right now you know the Walkerville neighbourhood is a hot commodity. These Windsor homes are located in a historic neighbourhood and are full of character and the surrounding local businesses has made them coveted by many. One street in the heart of Walkerville is Pierre Avenue. You can ask a Windsor REALTOR ® what this street name is and chances are you’ll get a variety of answers. Even among the Jumpers here we got different pronunciations. So which one is correct ?
There seems to be 3 main variations of the pronunciation amongst the Jump Realty agents polled. The first is the pronunciation “pea-air”, much like the pronunciation of the mens name. The second pronunciation we heard was “peer-ee” rhyming with “erie” like the lake. The last and least used pronunciation was “pier”, just like the structure you may fish off of. This version is almost the same as the first but said faster. So again, which one is correct? Well many made the argument that it should be pronounced like the persons name and those with a French background agreed. The “peer-ee” group has not given up however and remain steadfast they are correct. So to answer the question, well it depends on who you ask.
