Earth Day: How to Create a Greener Home

Today, April 22nd 2021, is Earth Day. A day where we are supposed to take a step back and think about our impact on the environment and think about how we can do our part to help sustain this planet we call home. So today we want to discuss some ways you can make your home greener and more sustainable. If you are in the Windsor real estate market you know that unless you are looking at new builds, the homes are typically a bit older and from a sustainability standpoint could use some upgrades.  So regardless if looking for homes for sale in Windsor, Ontario or are happy in your home, consider some of the ways below to not only create a greener home but also help save you some money along the way.

  1. Wash Your Clothes in Cold Water
    • Unless you are working with stubborn stains, warm water isn’t necessary when washing your clothes. 90% of the energy used is to heat the water.
  2. Line Dry
    • Skip the dryer all together, if you have a bright, sunny, warm day, hang dry clothes to save energy and money
  3. Swap Your Bulbs
    • Energy efficient bulbs last longer, use less energy, and will also save you money on utilities as well as replacements.
  4. Use a Programmable Thermostat
    • A programmable thermostat will allow you to have a greener home by programming the temperature to when only when you are in the house and not needlessly heating or cooling the home.
  5. Decorate Your Home with Plants
    • Plants act as natural air purifiers and come are even odor reducing. They also are a nice design touch and create a welcoming feeling to your home. Just remember to water them!
  6. Get Window Treatments
    • Window treatments don't only stop the neighbours from seeing in, blinds and curtains also help keep the cool or warm air in by adding an additional layer of protection before the windows which can have drafts. Another way to run your heat or air conditioning less which not only is great for the environment but for your bank account as well.
  7. BONUS STEP - Renewable Sources
    • If you want to really get into it, you can add your own renewable energy sources to your home like solar panels or wind turbines. This will allow you to generate clean energy for yourself and help reduce your energy use and costs from the utility companies.
