Technology Guide: Making Your Home Smart

In our last blog we discussed what happens when you finally get that call from your Windsor REALTOR® that you’ve done it, your offer was accepted and after what felt like endless amounts of searching and viewings of Windsor homes and houses for sale in Windsor, Ontario. You’ve got your home in the Windsor real estate market and in the next few months you own a home and we discussed some ways to make sure that home is secure. One of the things we talked about was smart home security systems. As mentioned these can be great because they can come with monitoring or without if you’d rather self-monitor. This got us thinking about more smart products for your home and how they can really transform your home. In this post we’re going to discuss some of these different smart home technologies.

Smart Speakers and Displays
- The most commonly known smart home items, think Amazon Echo, Google Nest, of Apple HomePod
- These smart speakers/displays can play music, read you news, find the weather, and some of the display ones have video chat capabilities. These are great for around the home and can tie in with other smart devices to automate your home
Smart Plugs
- These can either directly replace your plugs or plug into them to create smart outlets.
- You can plug any device into these and make it a part of your automation processes or on-demand changes. Tell Siri or Alexa to turn a light on that's plugged into a smart plug and it lights up!
Smart Camera
- We touched briefly on these in the last post but you don’t need a whole security system to get cameras. You can install one or more smart cameras around the interior and exterior of your home and keep an eye on everything from the dog during the day to making sure the kids get in safe from school.
- Take it a step further and make that camera a doorbell so you can keep an eye on the front door!
Smart Security
- We won’t go into these again but these can help secure your home and come with or without monitoring
- You can also get smart door locks for your home that allow you to remotely let people in and out (for when someone forgets a key) or tell Alexa to make sure the door is locked.
Smart Thermostat
- We covered these in the blog about going green in the home. These thermostats can help you program your home to save energy, can be set remotely, and again can tie in to a home management system using Siri or Alexa.
Smart Lighting
- Taking the smart plugs one step further, add a smart bulb to that lamp. You can change this on-demand or set-up routines like slowly dimming the bulb from white to soft yellow to fading out at night to help you fall asleep.
Other Smart Devices
- Don't like vacuuming? Get a smart vacuum and set it to do the chore for you
- Don’t like cutting the lawn? Get a smart lawnmower to do that too!
- Hate cooking? Get a smart countertop oven or sous cooker and set it and forget it!
- Take the guessing game out of BBQing with precision temperature control on smart BBQs and internal temperature thermometers that connect to your smartphone
- Have a smart sleep! Smart beds can help you track your sleeping patterns and can be adjusted accordingly for a better night's sleep
