Windsor-Essex News: $5 Billion Investment Officially Announced
While the popular topic of the area has been the Windsor real estate market, the cost of Windsor homes, and the struggle for some to find houses for sale in Windsor that suit them, the area was in the news for a different reason. The rumored investment in the Windsor-Essex area was officially announced with government officials including François-Philippe Champagne, Minister of Innovation, Science and Industry, Doug Ford, Premier of Ontario, and Drew Dilkens, Mayor of Windsor, on hand to make the announcement.
Stellantis and LG have partnered and selected Windsor for their new EV battery plant. This joint venture will see a total investment of over $5 billion CAD put into a facility to manufacture the batteries. These batteries will supply Stellantis plants not only in Canada but through North America. The site is located on almost 220 acres in the Windsor-Tecumseh area, near the old CS Wind plant, near Lauzon Road and E.C. Row Expressway. It’s designed to occupy 4.5 million square feet of space, or approximately 112 NHL-sized hockey rinks, and bring 2,500 well paying jobs to our region. Mayor Dilkens had this to say,
“Stellantis is Windsor’s largest employer and has a rich history in this community. Chrysler began operations in this community in 1928 and has employed generations of Windsor–Essex workers at its facility. With this announcement, we are securing the future for thousands more local workers and securing Windsor’s strategic location as the home of Canada’s electric vehicle future. As the world pivots to EVs, Windsor will soon be home to the battery manufacturing facility that powers it all.”
Plant construction is scheduled to begin later this year, and production is planned to launch in the first quarter of 2024, with the plant fully operational by 2025.
