Location, Location, Location
So you are looking to purchase your next home. You know the general area or neighbourhood you want, South Windsor, Lasalle, Amherstburg, Walkerville, Tecumseh, East Windsor, but what do you really know about the location of the home?
Remember, there is essentially only one thing you cannot change about your next home. The location. You change the colour, the layout, the inside, the outside, even put on an addition. But no matter how much time or money you put in, no matter what you do that house, it will still be standing right where it was before.
Once a house is built, it's pretty tough to move or relocate. Sure you’ve seen the TV shows and viral videos of people literally lifting up houses and moving them but let's be real, that's not happening.
So what is the moral of the story? Before you go and fall in love with what you think is your next home, be sure you are comfortable with where it is and understand the area.
How can you do this and be certain it is right for you?
If it's a new area of the city to you, explore the neighborhood and explore it frequently. Really get a feel for it, for what's around, for what the neighbours are like, etc. Sure you love the house, but if you cannot see yourself living in the area, the allure of the house wears off quickly. Important tip, don't do it just during the day, do it at night as well, and do it on both a weekday as well as the weekend. That street that seems nice and calm at noon on Sunday could end up being an after work shortcut at 5:30pm during the work week. That quiet alley, well it might be a busy thoroughfare or home to some dumpster-divers in the afternoon.
The most important aspects to consider are those that are important to you and your family. Focus on the wants and needs for your life. Some priorities might be local parks, schools in the area, public transit, how close are shopping centres, dining, entertainment, and don't forget that daily drive to and from work. Some even go as far to look into crime statistics to look at the safety of the area.
Sure you love how the house looks, but you must be sure of the area, the location, and that one you actually live there, you can live happily. Once you put pen to paper and sign that contract, it’s a done deal and it'll be too late to go back, so be sure that you are happy with the location before you sign on the dotted line.
