Remembrance Day: Windsor’s Poppy Streets
Today, November 11th, we take a moment to remember all of the brave men and women who have served, and continue to serve, our country.
If you’ve driven around areas of Windsor like South Walkerville, you may have noticed many street names with poppies on them. These streets are named after battles that Canadians fought in during the first and second World Wars. In 2005, the City of Windsor introduced brand new signs for these streets that included a poppy. These signs are a way we remember these important moments in history and honour all of those who fought for Canada. Let’s take a look at a few of the streets and learn more about them.
Vimy Street: Named after the World War I Battle of Vimy Ridge. 350 soldiers, many of them Canadian, died in battle.
Somme Street: Named after the multiple-months long Battle of Somme in France in World War I. Canada lost 24,000 brave soldiers and in total more than 620,000 allied soldiers perished.
Ypres Street: Running from Walker Road to Howard Avenue, Ypres (pronounced “eeps for the record, not ee-pray or ee-prays) is named after the Second Battle of Ypres in World War I in France. It was during this battle that Canadian Soldier John McCrae penned the now famous poem “In Flanders Fields”.
Other poppy streets in Windsor include Dieppe Street after the well known Battle of Dieppe, Lens Street, Verdun Street, and St. Julien. A shoutout to windsoriteDOTca for putting together this awesome list, check out more HERE.
In total between World Wars I and II, Canada lost over 110,000 service members. Today and everyday we remember the ultimate sacrifice they made and we thank all of our active members for their continued service.
