Local History: Duff-Baby House Celebrates 225 Years
While many continue to shop for houses for sale in Windsor, there is one iconic Windsor home that is certainly not for sale. A home that has withstood the test of time and the test of war. A home that has had historical visitors. A home many don’t realize is right here in Sandwich Town. The Duff-Baby House marked its 225th anniversary this July.
225 years ago on the shores of the Detroit River the Duff-Baby House was built. This elegant three-storey home features white beaded clapboard, wood pediment, fluted pilasters and iron hook. Over the course of two centuries this iconic building served as a trading house, a family home, and even a doctor’s office. The Duff-Baby House hosted Shawnee chief Tecumseh for dinner and in the War of 1812 it withstood occupation by enemy American troops.
Today this historic home is able to be visited as a museum and lets visitors travel back in time to the 1700 and 1800’s. There is also a volunteer group dedicated to the preservation of the mansion, calling themselves Les Amis Duff-Baby. The group received funding from the Gordie Howe International Bridge Community Benefits Plan to clear the overgrown site and return it to an iconic and historic site.
