You are in the market for your next home. You are shopping and scouring websites and listings trying to find just the right place for you. You see some homes that might be right, but how will you know when you have come across that perfect home?

Sometimes we can think of finding a home similar to trying to find that right person for your life. It can also be like another big purchase, a car. You are getting into a commitment and need to be sure your decision is right. Here is how.

Whether you are looking for the right person, the right car, the right home, or the right anything else really, the best starting place is with a list. Just like at Christmas for Santa, but hethe adult version, your wishlist. Write down all of the things that you are looking for in a house.

Tip, break that list down into wants and needs. Your dream home will have them all, but sometimes that does not come to fruition. Your needs are the essentials, the house must have them for you to even consider it. The wants are the cherries on top. The things that you definitely would love to have, but maybe are not necessary. These are the items you will be willing to make concessions on and in many cases, you will have to. Clearly identify which items fall into each category, this will help your search.

A list is great, it is the foundation for your search, it will lead you to the houses that fit you. Sometimes though, you’ll come across a home that maybe doesn’t check all the boxes, but feels right. Do not discount these homes. When you see or walk through that home that feels right, that you can truly see yourself living in happily, the list goes to the back burner. It got you there, but the home has to feel right. If a house checks every box, but you do not feel like it’s right, it isn’t. Our advice is this, combine the analytical of the list and the emotions of that gut feeling.
