Of course it does! While it is not something we often think about in our homes, the direction our ceiling fans spins not only effects the comfort level in your home but also your energy bills. Depending which way your fan spins, the air is being either forced up or forced down. Based on the time of the year, there actually is a correct way the fan should spin. Let's take a look at when your fan should be spinning in each direction.
Making sure your ceiling fan is spinning in the right direction for the time of the year will help you save money year round on heating and cooling bills. In the warm or summer months, your ceiling fan should spin counterclockwise. This is what will help create a direct and cooling breeze. This is referred to as a downdraft. Additionally, the higher the speed settings, the more air moved and the more you will feel the downdraft or cool air.
In the winter, your ceiling fans should be doing the opposite, spinning clockwise. This will help create an updraft and in turn recirculate warm air back into the living space helping to create a more comfortable temperature and keep your furnace from running as much. Remember, warm air rises. That means that nice warm air the furnace is creating tends to get trapped up at the ceiling. Set your ceiling fan to a low speed so you do not feel any cool breeze. This will create a updraft and in turn help to move that warm air at the ceiling back into the living space helping to regulate the temperature. This is especially useful if your home as tall or vaunted ceilings, you want to get that warm air back into the living space.
When you have your air conditioner running and pair it with your ceiling fan spinning in the right direction, you can see great energy efficiency and savings. This is due to what is referred to as the "wind chill effect". When the air hits your skin, evaporation of moisture on your skin happens quicker and in turn you feel cooler. This effect can allow you to increase the temperature of your home by up to 4 degrees without feeling any difference.
