At last update, we looked at an important milestone, the removing of the falsework bents. For those keeping an eye on the road decks, the gap has been steadily closing and the project team has officially announced the process of connecting the road decks is underway.
The gap is between the road decks is down to only 26 metres or 85 feet and it is anticipated that the two sides will connect at the end of June, marking the connection of Canada and the USA. There is one more segment measuring 15 metres or 49 feet to be installed on the American side after which the final piece called the mid-span closure will be installed to officially complete the road deck, and exciting and monumental milestone in construction. While this connection is a major accomplishment, the work will continue earnestly to ensure the bridge opens in the Fall of 2025. Once the deck is complete, remaining projects include crews stressing the stay cables, along with installation of electrical, fire suppression and drainage systems, barriers, signage, lighting, deck paving, and pavement markings, and the multi-use path. Once the decks are connected, the Gordie Howe International Bridge deck spanning the now iconic towers will measure 853 metres or 0.53 miles. This will make it the longest main span of any cable-stayed bridge in North America and the tenth longest in the world. Want to learn more about how they will connect the road deck? Check out the step-by-step process below and follow along as they do it in real time.
