In our last Gordie Howe Bridge update we looked looked at the beginning of the process of connecting the two bridge decks and connecting two countries. With the US deck now reaching its proper length for connection, the process of getting the midpsan closure completed hit another critical milestone.
The gap between the two road decks is now approximately 11 metres or 36 feet and the Gordie Howe Bridge team has completed Step 5 outlined in their bridge connection plan. They have installed all six temporary bracing pieces that hold the deck in alignment during the midspan closure. There are two closure beams, two wind struts, and two transverse cranks. From land it may look like the bridge decks are connected but we are not there quite yet as you can below. There are still Steps 6 through 13 for the bridge to be officially connected. The next steps include engineers physically measure the gap again before more structural work begins to ready to bridge for closure. Once the deck is connected around the end of June, crews will need to re-stress the stay cables, install electrical, fire suppression, drainage systems, barriers, signage, lighting, deck paving, and pavement markings, and the multi-use path before it opens in 2025. Once the decks are connected, the Gordie Howe International Bridge deck spanning the now iconic towers will measure 853 metres or 0.53 miles and connect Windsor and Detroit in the Sandwich and Delray communities respectively.
