In our last Gordie Howe Bridge update there was only about 11 metres or 36 feet between the two road decks. In the early hours June 14, history was made.
Early in the morning of Friday June 14th, 2024 history was officially made. Ironworkers and engineers on both the Windsor and Detroit sides of the project completed the installation of the two permanent edge girders. This marked the official connection the Gordie Howe Bridge. Project officials said that the edge girder installation took place in the early hours of Friday to beat the heat as high temperatures can expand the steel, so they opted for the cool conditions of early morning. From here crews will begin work to complete the road deck of the mid-span closure. They will then conduct surveys and re-stress the stay cables to ensure all is completed properly. Finally, the remaining infrastructure elements, such as the the multi-use path, along with the actual driving surface, lighting, and more will be completed. Check out the moment history was made below from the Gordie Howe International Bridge.
