Style Guide: Interior Design Trends to Leave in 2020
As 2020 thankfully comes to close, most people wouldn’t mind leaving the whole year in the past, and that’s fair. Today we’re going to focus on some of the design trends and elements that interior designers are saying should stay in 2020 along with all the other things we want to forget. So if you are in the market for a new home these may be some elements that you want to avoid in home buying. If you are about to sell and doing some sprucing up, you may want to avoid these trends as well. Let’s look at 7 trends that may be on the way out1:
- White oak floors might be a thing of the past
- Light-colored wood has been a popular choice recently because it can brighten up a room or whole home. However, designers are starting to look at darker, warmer, richer colours that can add depth to a home.
- Industrial look is out
- The industrial look became on-trend because of the clean lines and modern feel it creates. Sometimes though that design can feel cold or unwelcoming. Now designers are suggesting that their clients use warmer tones throughout the home to create a more welcoming vibe.
- Traditional kitchen islands, better options exist
- More designers are ditching the traditional kitchen island and going with the cantilever design. Essentially, this means having an overhang, creating a more useful island that you can sit at and not congest the kitchen area.
- “Pop of colour”
- The “pop of colour” idea with an accent piece has been around for a long time. However, more designers are urging their customers to fill space using more evenly filled out colours. We’re seeing more homes with a family of colours that compliment each other.
- TVs on display...put them away!
- As TV’s have grown, so has the tendency to wall mount them. A popular choice has been to hang it on a mantle or focal point of a room. However this can pull away from the aesthetic of the room. Now designers are urging people to use cabinets or other ways to hide the electronics to allow you to design as you want.
- The black and white scheme
- Somewhat tying into the industrial trend, the black and white trend could be on the way out for the same reason. Designers say the stark contrast lacks that homie and welcoming feeling. The more even-keeled colour palettes are in.
- Trends as a whole, OUT
- Designers agree that too often people look too much at trends and this can prevent them from styling and designing their home in a way that they themselves like and feel comfortable with. Trends aren’t for everyone!
