Home Improvement Planning Guide
As we enter into 2021, some of us might be thinking about our budgets for the year. For homeowners, that may mean mapping out this year’s home improvement projects. Planning, budgeting, and researching can help you save a lot of money when making improvements to your home. In this post we’ll discuss the roadmap below to help you plan your remodeling project no matter how big or small.
- Create Your Project Plan
- Write out your goals, what you want to accomplish in your home remodeling project
- Sketch an outline of the room and changes you’d like to make
- Get inspiration for your project, do your own research look online and in magazines for trends you may like
- Set Your Budget
- Decide how much you want to spend within your means
- Set aside 10% of your budget for unexpected expenses that may come up
- Double check with local authorities to find out if you need permits for your renovations
- Get bids from contractors, always get multiple bids, all contractors will be different, never settle for the first
- Choose Your Contractor(s)
- Do NOT hire your contractor(s) based on price alone, do your research
- Checks their references and reviews, see what other people who’ve hired them are saying
- Ask how long they’ve been in the business, what is their background
- Ask if they are licensed and insured, cover yourself in case something happens on site
- Discuss terms of payment, never pay in full upfront, set milestones when certain payments are due
- Build Your Timeline
- Work with your contractor(s) to set a completion date for your project
- Back out your individual timelines from the overall completion deadline
- Include time to clean out the work area, don’t forget you’ll need to prep the area
- Allow shipping and delivery for all materials in your timeline, some items may take longer than others
- Account for holidays or other days your contractor may not be working in your timeline
- Prep Your Work Area
- Pack up everything in your work area and make sure the area is clean and ready for work to begin
- Store and organize all your tools and supplies for ease of access
- Plan to avoid the room or area completely during work, this area is best to be kept off limits
- Let The Work Begin
- All that is left is for your remodel or renovation to begin!
